Evidence supporting the use of: Linalool
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in many flowers and spice plants, such as lavender and coriander. It is a major component in the essential oils of these plants and is commonly used in aromatherapy. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that linalool may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, primarily from preclinical studies. Animal research has shown that inhalation or administration of linalool can produce calming effects, reduce stress-induced behaviors, and modulate neurotransmitter systems associated with anxiety, such as GABAergic activity. A few small human clinical studies and trials involving aromatherapy have reported reductions in self-reported anxiety after exposure to linalool-containing essential oils; however, these studies are often limited by small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and potential placebo effects. The mechanism by which linalool may reduce anxiety is not fully understood but is thought to involve the modulation of glutamate and GABA neurotransmission in the brain. While the evidence is promising, especially from animal models, robust, large-scale clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the use of linalool for anxiety is supported by preliminary scientific research but does not yet have strong, high-quality clinical validation.
