Evidence supporting the use of: Large-Leaved Linden
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Large-Leaved Linden (Tilia platyphyllos) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine for alleviating symptoms of anxiety and nervous tension. The flowers, in particular, have been prepared as teas or infusions and consumed for their calming and mildly sedative effects. Historical herbal texts and ethnobotanical sources describe its use for soothing the nerves, promoting relaxation, and assisting with sleep disturbances related to anxiety. The presumed mechanisms include mild central nervous system depression and muscle relaxation, attributed to constituents such as flavonoids, volatile oils, and mucilaginous compounds present in the flowers.
However, scientific validation for these anxiolytic effects remains limited. While some laboratory and animal studies suggest that linden extracts may have mild sedative properties, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating efficacy specifically for anxiety disorders. Most modern references cite traditional use rather than evidence from well-designed research studies. Thus, the use of Large-Leaved Linden for anxiety is primarily justified by traditional practices, and the strength of supporting evidence is modest.
