Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus rhamnosus
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus rhamnosus, particularly the GG strain (L. rhamnosus GG), has garnered interest for its potential role in supporting or treating anxiety, based on a growing body of scientific research. The rationale stems from the concept of the gut-brain axis, which describes the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Several animal studies have shown that administration of L. rhamnosus can modulate neurotransmitter levels, reduce stress-induced behaviors, and impact GABA receptor expression in the brain, suggesting a potential anxiolytic effect.
In humans, the evidence is still preliminary but promising. Some small-scale clinical trials have reported that supplementation with probiotics containing L. rhamnosus may improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in both healthy individuals and those with certain medical conditions. A notable study published in 2011 in PNAS demonstrated that mice given L. rhamnosus exhibited reduced anxiety- and depression-related behavior. However, results in human trials are mixed and often limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and use of multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effect of L. rhamnosus alone.
Overall, while there is some scientific evidence—primarily from animal and a few human studies—supporting the use of L. rhamnosus for anxiety, the evidence base is not yet robust enough for definitive clinical recommendations. Larger, well-designed human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and clarify its mechanisms of action.
