Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactium, also known as casein decapeptide (αS1-casein hydrolysate), is a bioactive peptide derived from milk protein casein. Its use to support or treat anxiety is based on the premise that it interacts with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the brain, producing a calming effect similar to the natural anxiolytic effects of benzodiazepines, but without significant sedative or addictive properties.

Scientific support for lactium’s anxiolytic effects comes primarily from a handful of small-scale human clinical trials and animal studies. Several randomized placebo-controlled studies (e.g., Messaoudi et al., 2005, 2009) have reported modest reductions in stress and anxiety symptoms among participants taking lactium compared to placebo. These studies typically involve subjective measures (such as the Perceived Stress Scale or State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) and physiological markers (like reduced cortisol levels). The evidence suggests lactium may help with mild stress and sleep disturbances rather than clinical anxiety disorders. However, the overall quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and potential conflicts of interest (some studies were industry-sponsored).

Overall, while there is some scientific basis for lactium's use in anxiety and stress reduction, the strength of evidence is moderate at best. Larger, independent, and longer-term studies are needed to fully validate its efficacy and safety for anxiety treatment. At present, lactium is mainly marketed as a nutraceutical or functional food ingredient rather than a pharmaceutical treatment for anxiety.
