Catuaba is a traditional herbal remedy derived from the bark of several Brazilian trees, most notably Erythroxylum catuaba. It has a long history of use in Brazilian folk medicine, primarily as an aphrodisiac and nervine tonic. Its use for anxiety stems from these traditional applications, where it is believed to promote relaxation and reduce nervousness. However, scientific research on Catuaba's effects specifically related to anxiety is extremely limited. Most available studies have focused on its potential neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, with only a few animal studies suggesting mild anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. These studies are preliminary, often using crude extracts and not always specifying the species or standardization of the product. No robust human clinical trials have evaluated Catuaba for anxiety relief. Therefore, while Catuaba is used traditionally in Brazil to calm the nerves and support overall mental health, its efficacy for anxiety is not scientifically validated, and evidence supporting its use remains largely anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than rigorous research.
