Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium adolescentis
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting that Bifidobacterium adolescentis may have a role in modulating anxiety, but the evidence is still preliminary and mostly limited to animal studies and a small number of human trials. Animal studies have shown that administration of B. adolescentis can influence the gut-brain axis, potentially reducing anxiety-like behaviors. For example, one study demonstrated that B. adolescentis supplementation in mice altered neurotransmitter levels and improved stress-related behaviors. Human evidence is significantly more limited; one small clinical trial found that a multi-strain probiotic including B. adolescentis improved anxiety symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome, but it is difficult to attribute these effects solely to B. adolescentis due to the presence of other strains and confounding factors. There is currently no robust or large-scale clinical evidence supporting the use of B. adolescentis as a treatment for anxiety in otherwise healthy individuals. The proposed mechanisms involve modulation of inflammation, production of neuroactive compounds, and effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but these are not fully elucidated in humans. Overall, while the scientific rationale exists and initial findings are promising, more high-quality human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy for anxiety.
