Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Goldthread (Coptis chinensis) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for a variety of ailments, especially for infections and gastrointestinal issues. Its primary active compound, berberine, is well-known for its broad antimicrobial properties. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Goldthread is sometimes prescribed alongside or after antibiotic therapies to help restore digestive balance, reduce gastrointestinal discomfort, and support the body's "clearing of heat and toxins." However, these uses are rooted in centuries-old TCM practice and not in rigorous modern clinical trials. There is limited scientific evidence specifically addressing the use of Chinese Goldthread to support or treat side effects of antibiotics, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest berberine may modulate gut microbiota and have anti-inflammatory effects, but robust human data is lacking. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by some preliminary pharmacological studies, definitive clinical validation is not yet available.
