Bacillus clausii is a probiotic bacterium widely used to help prevent or reduce antibiotic-associated side effects, particularly diarrhea. Its use is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence, though the quality and scale of studies vary. Antibiotics disrupt the intestinal microbiota, often leading to gastrointestinal disturbances. B. clausii is notable for its resistance to many antibiotics, allowing it to survive alongside antibiotic therapy and help restore gut flora balance.

Several clinical trials and reviews have evaluated B. clausii’s efficacy. For example, a 2017 systematic review in Frontiers in Pharmacology concluded that B. clausii may reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) in both children and adults. Another randomized controlled trial published in European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences (2016) found that B. clausii supplementation significantly reduced the incidence and duration of diarrhea in children taking antibiotics. These studies suggest a protective role, attributed to B. clausii’s ability to modulate the immune response, compete with pathogens, and promote gut barrier integrity.

However, while results are promising, some limitations exist; studies are often small, with varying methodologies, and more large-scale, high-quality trials are needed. Nonetheless, the current scientific consensus recognizes B. clausii as a useful adjunct in minimizing certain antibiotic side effects, particularly gastrointestinal ones.
