Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids have been investigated for their potential role in supporting the treatment of anorexia nervosa, but the scientific evidence remains limited and preliminary. Omega-3s, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are essential polyunsaturated fats known for their benefits in brain health, inflammation modulation, and cellular membrane integrity. Patients with anorexia nervosa often have deficiencies in essential fatty acids due to prolonged dietary restriction and malnutrition.

Some small clinical studies and case reports have explored omega-3 supplementation in anorexia nervosa, hypothesizing that it may help by improving mood, cognitive function, and reducing comorbid depression and anxiety, which are common in this population. For example, a few pilot trials suggest that EPA may augment weight gain and improve psychological symptoms when used as an adjunct to standard treatment. Inflammation and altered lipid profiles in anorexia nervosa patients also provide a theoretical rationale for omega-3 use. However, these studies are typically small, lack replication, and are sometimes methodologically limited.

There is no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trial (RCT) that conclusively demonstrates omega-3 fatty acids as an effective primary or adjunctive treatment for anorexia nervosa. Current guidelines do not recommend omega-3s as a standard therapy for this condition, but supplementation may be considered for general nutritional support, especially if deficiency is suspected. Overall, scientific evidence is limited (rated 2/5), and more robust studies are needed to clarify their therapeutic role.
