Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is primarily used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a wide range of conditions, including as a rejuvenating tonic and adaptogen. In the context of angina (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart), its use is supported more by historical and traditional practice than by robust scientific evidence. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention ashwagandha as a "hridya" (heart-supportive) herb, thought to support heart health and vitality. The rationale in Ayurveda is that ashwagandha may help balance stress, improve resilience, and strengthen the cardiovascular system through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and adaptogenic properties. However, in terms of modern biomedical research, there are very few studies specifically examining ashwagandha for angina or coronary artery disease. Some animal studies suggest cardioprotective effects, such as reducing oxidative stress and improving lipid profiles, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to relief of angina symptoms in humans. Clinical trials in humans for angina are lacking. Therefore, while ashwagandha is sometimes used in traditional medicine to support heart health, its use for angina is not supported by strong scientific evidence, and any benefit is largely anecdotal or theoretical based on its general adaptogenic actions.
