Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), have been explored for their potential effects on mood regulation and behavioral health, including symptoms such as excessive anger and irritability. Research suggests that omega-3s play a role in brain structure and function, influencing neurotransmitter pathways and inflammation, both of which are relevant to mood disorders. Several small clinical trials and observational studies have found associations between low omega-3 status and increased aggression or anger, particularly in populations such as individuals with mood disorders, ADHD, or those under significant psychological stress. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported modest reductions in anger, aggression, or irritability with omega-3 supplementation, often in the context of broader psychiatric conditions rather than isolated anger. However, the evidence is not robust or consistent. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally conclude that while there is some preliminary support for the use of omega-3s in reducing aggression or anger, the effect sizes are small, and the quality of evidence is low to moderate. Studies also vary widely in dosage, duration, and population, making generalization difficult.
