Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is classified as a “rasayana” or rejuvenating herb. Traditional texts and practitioners often recommend ashwagandha for its calming and adaptogenic effects, which are believed to help balance emotions, including excessive anger. In Ayurveda, anger and irritability are often associated with imbalances in the doshas, particularly Pitta, and ashwagandha is thought to have a cooling and grounding effect that may help manage these imbalances. While there are no specific traditional formulations solely targeting anger, ashwagandha is commonly included in broader formulas for stress, anxiety, and emotional volatility. From a scientific perspective, while ashwagandha has been studied for its anti-stress and anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties, direct evidence for its effectiveness in treating excessive anger specifically is limited. Some clinical studies indicate that ashwagandha supplementation can reduce cortisol levels and perceived stress, potentially leading to improved emotional regulation. However, anger as a distinct psychological state is rarely the primary endpoint in these studies. Therefore, the use of ashwagandha for anger is primarily justified by traditional use, with only indirect scientific support through its general effects on stress and mood regulation.
