Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin B9, also known as folate or in supplement form as methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), is scientifically validated for the prevention and treatment of certain types of anemia, particularly megaloblastic anemia. Megaloblastic anemia is characterized by the presence of abnormally large and immature red blood cells, which result from impaired DNA synthesis. Folate is a critical cofactor in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), and a deficiency impairs cell division, especially in rapidly dividing cells like those in the bone marrow responsible for producing red blood cells.

Numerous clinical studies and authoritative health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recognize folate supplementation as an effective therapy for folate deficiency anemia. Folate supplementation (including as 5-MTHF) leads to rapid improvement in hematological parameters and reversal of megaloblastic anemia when the cause is folate deficiency. In individuals with genetic polymorphisms affecting folate metabolism (such as MTHFR mutations), the use of 5-MTHF instead of folic acid may provide more efficient supplementation.

However, it is important to note that not all anemias are caused by folate deficiency, and inappropriate supplementation can mask the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to neurological damage. Nonetheless, the use of Vitamin B9/5-MTHF for folate deficiency anemia is strongly supported by scientific evidence and is standard clinical practice.
