Rhizomes from certain plants, such as Curcuma longa (turmeric), Zingiber officinale (ginger), and Polygonatum sibiricum, have been traditionally used in various forms of medicine, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, as supportive treatments for anemia. The rationale in these traditions is often based on the belief that these rhizomes can invigorate the blood, improve circulation, or support the spleen and digestive system, which are considered important for blood formation in traditional frameworks. For example, in TCM, Polygonatum sibiricum rhizome is thought to "nourish the yin" and support overall vitality, which is sometimes interpreted as helping to address symptoms of anemia.
However, direct scientific evidence that these rhizomes can treat or significantly improve anemia is limited. Most of the support comes from traditional use and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials. Some rhizomes, such as turmeric, contain compounds (e.g., curcumin) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which might have indirect benefits for health, but there is little evidence that they directly increase hemoglobin levels or address the root causes of anemia. Therefore, while their use is justified by tradition and supported by centuries of empirical use, the scientific validation for their effectiveness in treating anemia specifically is weak, warranting a low-to-moderate evidence rating.
