Plantain (Plantago major), commonly known as common or English plantain, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various ailments, including as a general tonic. However, its use specifically for treating or supporting anemia is primarily rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation. Traditional herbalists and folk medicine practices in Europe and parts of Asia have sometimes recommended plantain as a blood tonic or a remedy for "weak blood," which is often interpreted as anemia. This usage is largely based on the belief that plantain's nutrient content—such as small amounts of iron and vitamin C—may help support blood health.

Despite its traditional use, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Plantago major in the direct treatment or management of anemia. Most scientific studies on plantain focus on its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antimicrobial properties, not on hematological effects.
