Oxygen therapy is scientifically validated for use in specific cases of anemia, particularly when anemia is severe enough to compromise tissue oxygenation and lead to hypoxemia. Anemia is defined as a deficiency in the number or quality of red blood cells or hemoglobin, resulting in reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Supplemental oxygen does not treat the underlying cause of anemia, but it can temporarily increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in the plasma, which can help support vital organ function while definitive treatment (such as blood transfusion or addressing the underlying cause) is pursued. Clinical guidelines recommend oxygen therapy in patients with acute or severe anemia who are showing signs of hypoxia or respiratory distress. There is robust clinical evidence supporting the use of supplemental oxygen in critically ill patients with anemia, especially in emergency and perioperative settings. However, in patients with chronic, stable anemia who are not hypoxemic, supplemental oxygen is generally not indicated and does not provide benefit. Thus, the use of oxygen in treating anemia is based on physiological principles and is supported by clinical studies and expert consensus, but its application is specific to cases where anemia leads to clinically significant hypoxemia.
