Morinda, particularly Morinda citrifolia (commonly known as noni), has been used in various traditional medicine systems, especially in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, for a range of ailments, including anemia. The traditional use is based on the belief that noni can "purify the blood" and promote general health, which includes supporting the body in cases of weakness or fatigue—symptoms often associated with anemia. Some ethnobotanical records mention the use of morinda root decoctions or fruit juice as a tonic for those suffering from anemia, especially in Indian Ayurvedic and Polynesian folk medicine.

However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. A few animal studies have explored the hematopoietic effects of Morinda extracts, showing some potential to increase red blood cell counts or hemoglobin in models of chemically-induced anemia. For example, a 2011 study in rats suggested that Morinda citrifolia fruit juice might have a protective effect against anemia by improving certain blood parameters. Nonetheless, these studies are preliminary, with small sample sizes and limited reproducibility, and there are very few, if any, robust clinical trials in humans.

Overall, while morinda is traditionally used in some cultures to help with anemia or anemia-like symptoms, current scientific evidence is not strong enough to confirm its effectiveness for this purpose. Its use for anemia should be considered as complementary and not as a replacement for evidence-based medical treatments.
