Evidence supporting the use of: Mineral ascorbate (unspecified)
For the health condition: Anemia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Mineral ascorbates are salts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) combined with minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium. Their use to support or treat anemia—particularly iron-deficiency anemia—is scientifically validated. Vitamin C is well known to enhance the absorption of non-heme iron (the form of iron present in plant-based foods and supplements) in the gastrointestinal tract. It does so by reducing ferric iron (Fe3+) to the more soluble ferrous form (Fe2+), which is more readily absorbed by intestinal cells. Multiple clinical studies and authoritative reviews have demonstrated that co-administration of vitamin C with oral iron increases iron absorption and improves hemoglobin levels in individuals with iron-deficiency anemia. Mineral ascorbates are often preferred for their gentler effect on the stomach compared to pure ascorbic acid, making them suitable for patients who require long-term supplementation.
While the evidence is robust for vitamin C in general (including mineral ascorbates), most studies specifically use ascorbic acid rather than mineral ascorbate forms. However, since mineral ascorbates provide ascorbate in a bioavailable form, the mechanism of enhancing iron absorption is presumed to be equivalent. Guidelines from organizations such as the World Health Organization and various hematology associations recommend vitamin C supplementation as an adjunct to iron therapy for anemia. Thus, the use of mineral ascorbate for anemia is based on solid scientific evidence, though not uniquely superior to other vitamin C forms.
