Legume protein is used to support/treat anemia primarily due to its nutritional content, particularly its iron and protein content. Scientific studies have shown that legumes, including beans, lentils, and peas, are good sources of non-heme iron, which can help improve iron status in populations at risk for iron-deficiency anemia. However, the type of iron found in legumes (non-heme) is less bioavailable than heme iron found in animal products, and its absorption can be inhibited by phytates, polyphenols, and some fibers present in legumes. Several intervention studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated modest improvements in hemoglobin and iron status with increased legume consumption, especially when combined with vitamin C-rich foods that enhance non-heme iron absorption. Nevertheless, the effect is generally less pronounced compared to iron supplementation or consumption of animal-sourced foods. Additionally, legumes are a staple in many vegetarian and vegan diets, making them an important protein and iron source for those avoiding animal products. While scientific evidence supports their contribution to dietary iron intake and potentially to reducing anemia risk, the strength of evidence is moderate due to bioavailability issues and study variability. Thus, legumes can support anemia prevention and management, but they are not a standalone treatment for anemia.
