Growth factors, specifically erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) such as erythropoietin (EPO) and darbepoetin alfa, are well-established and scientifically validated treatments for certain forms of anemia, particularly anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), cancer chemotherapy, and some other chronic diseases. Erythropoietin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. In patients with CKD or those undergoing chemotherapy, endogenous EPO production can be insufficient, resulting in anemia. Recombinant human erythropoietin and related agents have been developed to address this deficiency. Multiple randomized clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that ESAs are effective in increasing hemoglobin levels, reducing transfusion requirements, and improving quality of life in appropriately selected patients. Their use is supported by guidelines from major medical organizations such as the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). However, therapy with ESAs is not without risks: studies have shown increased risks of hypertension, thromboembolic events, and, in some cancer patients, potentially reduced survival if used to target higher hemoglobin levels. Therefore, their use is carefully tailored to individual patient needs and monitored closely. In summary, the use of growth factors for the treatment of specific types of anemia is grounded in robust scientific evidence and is a standard of care in certain clinical situations.
