Glycyrrhiza, commonly known as licorice root, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and various folk medicines. In TCM, Glycyrrhiza species (most often Glycyrrhiza uralensis) are components of many herbal formulas, some of which are prescribed for conditions associated with anemia or blood deficiency, often in combination with other herbs. The rationale in these traditions is generally based on principles of harmonizing and improving the function of the spleen and stomach, which are believed to be involved in the production of blood.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Glycyrrhiza for anemia in humans is scarce. While some preclinical research suggests that certain compounds in licorice may have effects on hematopoiesis (blood formation) or may modulate inflammation and oxidative stress, there is little robust clinical data demonstrating efficacy in treating anemia of any cause. The use of Glycyrrhiza for anemia is thus primarily rooted in traditional practices and theoretical frameworks rather than scientific validation. Safety concerns, especially with long-term use due to effects on mineralocorticoid metabolism (leading to potential hypertension and hypokalemia), also limit its application.
