Panax ginseng has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine, particularly within Chinese and Korean cultures, as a general tonic to promote vitality, strengthen the body, and address various conditions including fatigue and weakness—symptoms often associated with anemia. In traditional medicine systems, ginseng is sometimes recommended to “nourish the blood” or restore energy in individuals believed to have blood deficiency, which could conceptually correspond to anemia.
However, direct scientific validation for the use of Panax ginseng specifically in treating or supporting anemia is limited. Animal studies have provided some preliminary evidence that certain ginsenosides (active compounds in ginseng) may stimulate erythropoiesis (the production of red blood cells), but robust clinical data in humans are lacking. A few small-scale studies suggest possible improvements in hemoglobin or red blood cell count in specific populations (e.g., patients on chemotherapy), but results are inconsistent and not sufficient to support routine use of ginseng for anemia. Major medical reviews and guidelines do not recommend Panax ginseng as a treatment for anemia.
