Fish and shellfish are scientifically validated as supportive foods for the treatment and prevention of anemia, particularly iron-deficiency anemia. The primary mechanism is their high content of heme iron, which is more efficiently absorbed by the human body compared to non-heme iron found in plant sources. Numerous studies have demonstrated that regular consumption of fish and shellfish can significantly increase serum ferritin and hemoglobin levels in individuals with iron deficiency. In addition to iron, fish and shellfish also provide other nutrients essential for erythropoiesis (red blood cell production), such as vitamin B12 and folate.
For example, shellfish like clams, oysters, and mussels are among the richest dietary sources of heme iron. A 100-gram serving of cooked clams can provide over 100% of the recommended daily intake of iron for adults. Epidemiological studies have shown lower rates of anemia in populations with higher seafood intake. Clinical trials and dietary intervention studies support the use of fish and shellfish as part of dietary strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of iron-deficiency anemia. However, while fish and shellfish are beneficial, they are typically recommended as part of a balanced diet rather than as the sole therapy for anemia.
