Curcuma (most commonly referring to Curcuma longa, or turmeric) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these systems, turmeric is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to "purify the blood" or to support overall vitality, which may be interpreted by some practitioners as helping with conditions like anemia. However, these traditional uses are not based on a direct understanding of anemia as defined in modern medicine (i.e., a deficiency in red blood cells or hemoglobin).
Modern scientific evidence for the use of curcuma/turmeric in the treatment or support of anemia is very limited. A few preclinical studies have examined curcumin's effects on iron metabolism, suggesting that it may actually inhibit iron absorption by binding to iron in the gut, potentially worsening iron-deficiency anemia. Human clinical trials demonstrating benefit for anemia are lacking. Therefore, while curcuma is used in traditional contexts for blood-related concerns, there is no strong scientific validation for its use specifically for anemia, and the evidence supporting this traditional indication is weak.
