Caesalpinia crista (also known as Caesalpinia bonduc or "Fever Nut") has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicinal systems, particularly in India. In Ayurveda, the seeds and other plant parts of Caesalpinia crista are used as remedies for a variety of ailments, including anemia. The traditional rationale for its use in anemia is based on its classification as a 'Rasayana' (rejuvenative) and its reputed ability to improve general strength, vitality, and blood quality. Some traditional Ayurvedic texts and practitioners recommend preparations containing Caesalpinia crista for conditions described as "Pandu" (which roughly corresponds to anemia). The seeds are sometimes combined with other herbs thought to nourish and purify the blood.
However, scientific validation is limited. There are a few animal studies suggesting hematinic (blood-building) properties, possibly due to the presence of certain micronutrients (like iron) and antioxidants in the seeds. For example, some preclinical studies in rodents have reported increased hemoglobin and red blood cell counts after administration of Caesalpinia crista extracts. Nevertheless, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans that confirm these effects, and the mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, while the use of Caesalpinia crista for anemia is supported by traditional use and limited preclinical data, strong scientific validation is currently lacking.
