Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) has been traditionally used in various cultures as a supportive food for anemia. The rationale behind its use is primarily due to its content of vitamins (notably vitamin C) and minerals, as well as its dark pigmentation, which in folk medicine is sometimes associated with blood-building properties. Traditional herbal medicine texts from Europe, Asia, and North America mention blackberry as a tonic for general weakness and occasionally for anemia, though often without specific clinical evidence.
From a scientific perspective, blackberries are a moderate source of iron and a good source of vitamin C, which aids iron absorption. However, the actual iron content in blackberries is relatively low compared to foods typically recommended for anemia management, such as red meat or legumes. There are few, if any, clinical studies directly evaluating blackberry consumption as a treatment for anemia. The benefit may be indirect, as vitamin C-rich foods can improve non-heme iron absorption from plant sources when consumed together. Thus, while the tradition of using blackberry for anemia exists, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited, and it should not be relied upon as a primary intervention for anemia.
