Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lebbek (Albizia lebbeck) has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani. While it is most commonly cited for its anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, its use in the management of anal fistula or fissure is primarily based on traditional formulations and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation. In Ayurvedic practice, Lebbek bark powder is sometimes included in topical pastes or decoctions intended to promote wound healing and reduce inflammation in anorectal disorders, including fissures and fistulas. The rationale is that its astringent and antimicrobial properties may help in local healing and infection control.

However, direct clinical studies evaluating Lebbek specifically for anal fistula or fissure are lacking. The available scientific evidence consists mainly of in vitro or animal studies demonstrating general wound-healing and anti-inflammatory effects of Lebbek extracts. No human clinical trials have conclusively established its efficacy for this indication. Therefore, while its use is supported by traditional medical systems, the quality and quantity of supporting evidence are limited, and it should not be considered a scientifically validated treatment for anal fistula or fissure.
