Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cassia fistula, commonly known as the golden shower tree, is frequently referenced in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its laxative and mild anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of anal fistula and fissure, its primary role is as a gentle laxative to soften stools, thereby reducing strain during defecation and minimizing pain and trauma to the affected area. Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention the use of Cassia fistula (known as "Aragvadha") for its purgative action and its application in skin and wound healing disorders, which may be extrapolated to anorectal conditions. However, there is minimal scientific validation from controlled clinical trials specifically evaluating Cassia fistula for the treatment or healing of anal fistula or fissure. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional therapeutic practice rather than rigorous modern research. While there are some studies documenting the plant’s general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions, these do not directly address its efficacy in anal fistula or fissure. Thus, while its use in this context is justified by tradition and supported by some plausible mechanisms (such as easing defecation and possibly supporting wound healing), the evidence base remains weak by modern scientific standards.
