Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Baliospermum montanum, known as Danti in Ayurveda, is traditionally used in Indian medicine for its purgative and anti-inflammatory properties. Ayurvedic classical texts mention its use in the management of conditions involving constipation, piles (hemorrhoids), and related anorectal disorders. In the context of anal fistula (Bhagandara) and fissure (Parikartika), Baliospermum is often one component in polyherbal formulations or used as a supportive remedy, typically administered as a root powder, decoction, or oil preparation. The rationale stems from its reputed ability to reduce local inflammation, act as a mild laxative (thus reducing straining during defecation), and promote wound healing. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating Baliospermum for anal fistula or fissure. Most available literature consists of traditional uses, ethnobotanical surveys, or general pharmacological studies highlighting its anti-inflammatory and wound healing potential in animal models. Rigorous clinical trials focused on anal fistula or fissure are lacking. Therefore, while the use of Baliospermum for these conditions is well-rooted in traditional practice, robust scientific validation is currently insufficient.
