Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for women’s health issues, including menstrual irregularities such as amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation). In traditional European herbalism and aromatherapy, clary sage is believed to have emmenagogue properties, meaning it may stimulate menstrual flow. Folk remedies have used clary sage essential oil, often applied as a massage oil or inhaled, to help balance hormones and promote regular menstruation. However, these uses are based primarily on anecdotal and historical reports rather than robust scientific studies.

Scientific evidence supporting clary sage’s effectiveness for amenorrhea is very limited. While some laboratory studies suggest that compounds in clary sage (such as sclareol) can interact with estrogen receptors and have mild estrogen-like effects, there are no well-conducted clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for treating amenorrhea. Most of the current support for this use remains within traditional and complementary medicine practices, and the quality of evidence is low. Thus, while clary sage is traditionally used for amenorrhea, its use is not scientifically validated at this time.
