Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Anemone, particularly species like Anemone pulsatilla (commonly known as Pasque flower), has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various gynecological issues, including amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation). Historical records from European herbalists in the 18th and 19th centuries describe the use of Anemone pulsatilla as an emmenagogue—a substance believed to stimulate menstrual flow. Its use was mainly based on empirical observations and the doctrine of signatures rather than rigorous scientific study. Traditional texts, such as those by Mrs. Grieve ("A Modern Herbal", 1931), mention pulsatilla as a remedy for delayed or suppressed menstruation, particularly in women with a sensitive or emotional constitution.

Despite these historical uses, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to validate the efficacy or safety of Anemone for treating amenorrhea. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies supporting its use for menstrual disorders are virtually nonexistent. The available evidence is largely anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than controlled scientific research. Therefore, while Anemone’s use for amenorrhea is justified by tradition, its evidence rating is low due to the absence of scientific validation.
