Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aloe (most commonly Aloe vera or Aloe barbadensis) has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and some folk remedies, to support the management of amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation). In Ayurvedic medicine, preparations containing Aloe vera (often as "Kumari") are sometimes recommended for women with irregular or absent periods, as Aloe is believed to have properties that stimulate the uterus and regulate menstrual cycles. Traditional texts suggest that Aloe can act as an emmenagogue—an agent that stimulates or increases menstrual flow.

Despite this traditional use, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support the use of Aloe for amenorrhea. While a few small studies have investigated the effects of Aloe on reproductive health, none have provided strong or conclusive evidence for its effectiveness in treating amenorrhea. Most available information is anecdotal or based on traditional herbal practice rather than controlled clinical trials. Additionally, Aloe contains compounds such as aloin, which can have laxative and uterine stimulant effects, but their safety and efficacy for menstrual regulation remain unproven. Given the limited and low-quality evidence, Aloe’s use for amenorrhea should be approached with caution, and it is best to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and management of menstrual disorders.
