Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used traditionally in East Asian medicine for promoting longevity and cognitive health, but its application specifically for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is based more on emerging scientific interest than on longstanding traditional use for dementia. Preclinical studies have shown that extracts of reishi mushroom contain bioactive compounds, such as triterpenoids and polysaccharides, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects in cell and animal models. Some studies have demonstrated that reishi extract can reduce amyloid-beta aggregation, improve cognitive performance, and suppress neuroinflammation in mouse models of Alzheimer's Disease.

However, despite these promising findings, the evidence is still preliminary. There are very few clinical trials in humans, and existing studies are small or have methodological limitations. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some early experimental support for reishi mushroom's potential benefits in Alzheimer's Disease, the evidence is not robust enough to recommend its use as a standard treatment. More rigorous human clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in this context. For now, reishi mushroom may be considered a promising adjunct or preventive strategy, but not a primary therapy for Alzheimer's Disease.
