Quercetin, a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, has garnered interest as a potential supportive agent for Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on preclinical scientific evidence. Laboratory and animal studies suggest that quercetin may exert neuroprotective effects through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloid properties. In rodent models of Alzheimer's, quercetin has been shown to reduce oxidative stress, inhibit beta-amyloid plaque formation (a hallmark of AD), and improve cognitive performance. For example, a 2018 study in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience demonstrated that quercetin administration improved memory and reduced AD pathology in mice. Mechanistically, quercetin appears to modulate signaling pathways involved in neuronal survival and inflammation, such as Nrf2 and NF-κB. However, evidence in humans is currently limited. Clinical trials directly testing quercetin in Alzheimer's patients are scarce and have not definitively established efficacy or safety for this indication. Most available data are from laboratory or animal research, which may not translate to humans due to differences in metabolism, bioavailability, and disease complexity. As such, while there is promising scientific rationale and some preclinical validation, the quality and quantity of human evidence supporting quercetin’s use for Alzheimer's disease is currently weak. More robust clinical studies are needed before quercetin can be recommended as a treatment or adjunct for AD.
