The scientific interest in norvaline centers on its role as an arginase inhibitor, which may enhance nitric oxide (NO) production by increasing the availability of L-arginine, a substrate for nitric oxide synthase. Since impaired NO signaling and neuroinflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of AD, norvaline's theoretical benefit is based on its potential to restore NO levels and reduce neuroinflammation.
The evidence supporting norvaline's use in Alzheimer's Disease is limited to a handful of animal studies.
