Myricetin is a natural flavonoid found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Its potential role in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease is based primarily on scientific research, particularly preclinical studies. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that myricetin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. These characteristics may help counteract some of the pathological processes involved in Alzheimer's, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and amyloid-beta aggregation.
For example, in vitro studies have demonstrated that myricetin can inhibit the formation and promote the disaggregation of amyloid-beta fibrils, which are implicated in the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. In animal models, myricetin has shown some capacity to improve cognitive function and reduce markers of neurodegeneration. Additionally, myricetin has exhibited the ability to modulate various signaling pathways involved in neuronal survival and memory function.
However, it is important to note that, as of now, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence in humans to support the efficacy of myricetin for Alzheimer's Disease. No large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials have been published. Therefore, while the experimental data are promising and provide a rationale for further investigation, the evidence supporting myricetin's use in Alzheimer's remains preliminary, and its clinical relevance is not yet established.
