Mulberry (Morus alba and related species) has been investigated in recent years for its potential neuroprotective effects, including in the context of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The scientific interest largely stems from the rich content of bioactive compounds in mulberry, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and resveratrol-like polyphenols, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic properties in preclinical studies.
Several animal and in vitro studies suggest that mulberry extracts may help reduce oxidative stress and inhibit the formation of beta-amyloid plaques, a hallmark of AD pathology. For example, research published in Phytotherapy Research (2018) showed that mulberry fruit extract improved cognitive function and decreased amyloid-beta deposition in mouse models. Other studies indicate that mulberry polyphenols can modulate cholinergic neurotransmission, further supporting their potential role in cognitive health.
However, while these preclinical results are promising, direct evidence from human clinical trials is very limited. There are only a few small-scale or preliminary studies in humans, and none have provided definitive proof of efficacy in AD patients. Therefore, scientific support for mulberry’s use in Alzheimer’s Disease remains preliminary, justifying a low-to-moderate evidence score. More large-scale, well-controlled human trials are needed to establish clinical benefit and safety in this context.
