Morus species, particularly Morus alba (white mulberry), have been investigated for their potential neuroprotective effects, including their possible use in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The justification for this use is based primarily on emerging scientific studies rather than long-standing traditional practice. Research has shown that extracts from Morus alba leaves, fruits, and root bark contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and stilbenes, which may exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic activities—all mechanisms relevant to the pathogenesis of AD.
Preclinical studies (in vitro and in animal models) have demonstrated that Morus extracts can inhibit acetylcholinesterase, reduce oxidative stress, and lower beta-amyloid deposition, suggesting a potential to improve cognitive function and slow neurodegenerative processes. For example, a number of rodent studies have reported improved memory and learning in models of cognitive impairment after administration of Morus alba extract. However, clinical evidence in humans is currently very limited; there are few, if any, robust randomized controlled trials evaluating Morus supplementation in people with Alzheimer's Disease.
Overall, while the use of Morus is supported by preliminary scientific research, the strength of the evidence is low (rated 2 out of 5) due to the lack of high-quality human studies. Further research is necessary to confirm efficacy and safety in the context of Alzheimer's Disease.
