Lion's mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) has gained attention for its potential cognitive benefits, including possible roles in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease. The use of lion's mane for cognitive health is rooted in both traditional medicine and emerging scientific research, but the evidence specific to Alzheimer's is still preliminary.
Preclinical studies have shown that lion's mane contains bioactive compounds—such as hericenones and erinacines—which may stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and promote neurogenesis. Animal studies suggest that lion's mane extracts can reduce amyloid-beta plaques, improve memory, and protect against neurodegeneration. These mechanisms are relevant to Alzheimer's pathology, which is characterized by amyloid plaque accumulation and neuronal loss.
Human evidence is limited but promising. A small number of randomized, placebo-controlled trials in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have demonstrated modest improvements in cognitive function after several weeks of lion’s mane supplementation. For example, a 2009 Japanese study found that daily intake of lion’s mane improved cognitive scores in MCI patients, though benefits diminished after discontinuation. However, these studies often have small sample sizes and short durations, and none have directly studied patients with diagnosed Alzheimer's Disease.
In summary, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some early evidence supporting the use of lion's mane for cognitive support, robust clinical trials in Alzheimer's patients are lacking. Therefore, the current scientific evidence for its use in Alzheimer's Disease rates a 2 out of 5.
