L-serine is a non-essential amino acid that has garnered interest in recent years for its potential neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects, including possible benefits in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The rationale for its use is primarily based on preclinical and early-stage clinical research. L-serine serves as a precursor for several important biomolecules, such as phosphatidylserine and D-serine, both of which are involved in neuronal signaling and membrane integrity. In animal models of neurodegeneration, L-serine supplementation has demonstrated neuroprotective effects, possibly by reducing neuroinflammation, modulating excitotoxicity, and supporting cellular metabolism.

The scientific validation for L-serine in Alzheimer's Disease is limited but growing. Notably, a small pilot clinical trial published in 2016 suggested that L-serine was well-tolerated and might slow functional decline in patients with early AD, but the study was not large enough to draw definitive conclusions. Additional research, including a 2020 open-label study, has indicated that L-serine may reduce neurotoxic stress and support neuronal survival. However, robust, placebo-controlled human trials are lacking, and the precise mechanisms by which L-serine could benefit Alzheimer's patients remain under investigation.

Overall, the use of L-serine in AD is supported by promising but preliminary scientific evidence. It is not grounded in traditional medicine, nor is it completely unsupported. More rigorous clinical trials are necessary to determine its efficacy and safety for Alzheimer's Disease.
