Ganoderma lucidum, also known as reishi mushroom, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting longevity and cognitive health. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in its potential role in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and cell cultures, have shown that extracts from Ganoderma lucidum possess neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These effects may theoretically counteract some of the pathological processes involved in AD, such as oxidative stress, amyloid-beta aggregation, and neuroinflammation.
Some animal studies have demonstrated that Ganoderma lucidum extracts can improve learning and memory, reduce amyloid plaque deposition, and decrease neuroinflammatory markers. Additionally, certain polysaccharides and triterpenoids isolated from Ganoderma have been identified as active compounds with potential neuroprotective effects. However, the evidence in humans is extremely limited; there are very few clinical trials, and those available are often small, of low methodological quality, or focus on broader cognitive decline rather than diagnosed Alzheimer's Disease.
In summary, while there is some scientific basis for further research, the current level of evidence supporting the use of Ganoderma lucidum for Alzheimer's Disease is preliminary and mostly preclinical. It cannot be considered a validated therapy for AD at this time, and more rigorous clinical studies are needed to determine its efficacy and safety in this context.
