Flavonones, a subclass of flavonoids commonly found in citrus fruits, have been investigated for their potential neuroprotective effects, including in the context of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The scientific rationale for their use is based primarily on preclinical (in vitro and animal) studies rather than extensive clinical evidence. These studies suggest that flavonones such as naringenin and hesperidin possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic properties. They may help reduce oxidative stress and inhibit the formation of beta-amyloid plaques, which are hallmark features of AD pathology. Additionally, some flavonones have been shown to modulate signaling pathways involved in neuronal survival and cognitive function.
However, human clinical trials specifically examining the efficacy of flavonones in preventing or treating Alzheimer's Disease are very limited. The majority of available evidence is derived from laboratory research and animal models, with only a few small-scale or indirect human studies. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for further investigation, current evidence supporting the use of flavonones for Alzheimer's Disease in humans is limited and preliminary. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are necessary to establish efficacy and safety in this context.
