Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin in green tea, has been investigated for its potential neuroprotective effects, including in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Scientific interest stems from EGCG's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloidogenic properties observed in preclinical studies. In vitro and animal models suggest that EGCG can inhibit beta-amyloid aggregation, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate pathways implicated in neurodegeneration.

Despite promising laboratory data, human clinical evidence remains limited and inconclusive. A few small-scale clinical trials and epidemiological studies have examined the effects of green tea or EGCG supplementation on cognitive function or AD progression, but results are mixed and generally do not establish clear efficacy in preventing or treating Alzheimer's Disease. Most human studies focus on general cognitive health rather than diagnosed AD, and often involve green tea consumption rather than isolated EGCG.

Current systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that, while EGCG shows neuroprotective potential in experimental models, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to recommend its use for Alzheimer's Disease. Larger, well-designed human trials are needed to determine therapeutic value. Thus, use of EGCG for AD is supported by scientific rationale and preclinical evidence, but lacks strong human validation.
