Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) has attracted scientific interest for its potential neuroprotective effects, primarily due to its high content of polyphenols and anthocyanins, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are considered significant contributors to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and natural antioxidants are being explored as adjunctive therapies. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that chokeberry extracts can reduce oxidative stress in neuronal cells, inhibit acetylcholinesterase (an enzyme involved in the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter reduced in AD), and decrease markers of neuroinflammation. For example, studies in rodents have demonstrated improvements in memory and learning following chokeberry supplementation, which is hypothesized to result from reduced amyloid-beta accumulation and enhanced antioxidant defenses in the brain.

However, clinical evidence in humans is currently lacking. No large-scale, randomized controlled trials have been conducted to directly assess the efficacy of chokeberry in preventing or treating Alzheimer's Disease in humans. Thus, while the scientific rationale is supported by preclinical research, the overall evidence remains preliminary. The use of chokeberry for Alzheimer's Disease is not established in traditional medicine systems, and its support is primarily based on laboratory research rather than clinical practice.

In summary, chokeberry shows promise as a neuroprotective agent in laboratory models, but more rigorous human studies are required before it can be recommended as a treatment or preventative for Alzheimer's Disease.
