Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium (various species)
For the health condition: Alzheimer's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bifidobacterium species are being investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD), primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional use. Recent research has highlighted the connection between gut microbiota and brain health, referred to as the "gut-brain axis." Alterations in the gut microbiome composition, including reduced levels of Bifidobacterium, have been observed in patients with Alzheimer's Disease. Animal studies have shown that supplementation with Bifidobacterium species can reduce neuroinflammation, modulate immune responses, and even improve cognitive function in models of Alzheimer's Disease. A few small human clinical trials and pilot studies have suggested that probiotic supplementation, sometimes including Bifidobacterium, may modestly improve cognitive function or certain biomarkers associated with AD. However, these studies are preliminary, with small sample sizes and short durations, and often use multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the specific effects of Bifidobacterium.
There is currently insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical evidence to recommend Bifidobacterium as a treatment or preventative measure for Alzheimer's Disease. The evidence supporting its use is largely preclinical or preliminary clinical, which is why the rating given is 1 out of 5. More rigorous, controlled human studies are needed to establish both efficacy and safety for this application.
