Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment with strong antioxidant properties, naturally found in microalgae and seafood such as salmon and shrimp. Its use in supporting or treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is primarily justified by preliminary scientific studies rather than traditional medicine. Preclinical research has demonstrated that astaxanthin can cross the blood-brain barrier and may protect neuronal cells from oxidative stress, a significant factor in AD pathogenesis. Some animal studies and in vitro experiments suggest that astaxanthin can reduce beta-amyloid accumulation, inhibit neuroinflammation, and improve cognitive performance in models of neurodegeneration.
However, human evidence is limited. A few small clinical trials have evaluated the cognitive effects of astaxanthin in healthy older adults, but these studies are not specific to Alzheimer's patients and show only modest improvements in cognitive function or oxidative stress biomarkers. There are currently no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials demonstrating that astaxanthin prevents, slows, or treats Alzheimer's Disease in humans. Thus, while the mechanistic rationale and early data are promising, the overall strength of evidence is low. Use of astaxanthin for Alzheimer's support should be considered experimental until more robust clinical data are available.
