Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anserine is a naturally occurring dipeptide (β-alanyl-1-methyl-L-histidine) found in high concentrations in the skeletal muscle and brain of poultry and some fish. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in the potential neuroprotective and cognitive benefits of anserine, particularly in relation to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Several small clinical and preclinical studies have investigated whether anserine, often in combination with carnosine, may help slow cognitive decline or reduce neuroinflammation associated with AD. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that supplementation with anserine/carnosine mixtures can improve cognitive function in elderly adults and in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is often a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's. Possible mechanisms include antioxidant effects, inhibition of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and reduction of neuroinflammation.

However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is limited. Most studies are small-scale, short-term, and often use mixed supplements rather than pure anserine. While some results are promising, no large-scale, long-term RCTs have definitively established anserine’s efficacy in preventing or treating Alzheimer’s Disease. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation for its use in supporting cognitive function, the evidence is still considered preliminary and further research is needed before it can be recommended as a standard intervention for AD.
