Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Violet (Viola odorata and related species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in European and Ayurvedic practices, for supporting respiratory health and treating symptoms related to allergies, such as cough, congestion, and mild inflammation of the respiratory tract. The plant's leaves and flowers have been used in infusions, syrups, and teas as a soothing remedy for irritated throat and bronchial tissues. The traditional rationale for its use in allergies stems from its purported demulcent (soothing) and mild anti-inflammatory properties, with some texts recommending violet preparations for “catarrh” and other upper respiratory tract discomforts that may overlap with allergic symptoms.

However, scientific validation for violet’s efficacy specifically in treating or managing respiratory allergies is minimal. Only limited in vitro or animal studies have suggested anti-inflammatory or mild antihistaminic effects, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials confirming its benefit for allergic conditions in humans. Therefore, while violet's use for respiratory allergies is supported by tradition, the scientific evidence is weak and mostly anecdotal or based on historical medical writings.
