Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tagetes, commonly known as marigold, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Central and South America, as well as in parts of Asia. In folk practices, Tagetes species have been utilized for a variety of ailments, including respiratory complaints such as coughs, colds, and symptoms suggestive of allergies. The plant is often prepared as teas, infusions, or inhalations to help alleviate symptoms such as congestion and irritation of the respiratory tract. The rationale in traditional use is largely based on the plant’s perceived anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, as well as its aromatic compounds, which might provide symptomatic relief.

While there are some laboratory studies indicating that Tagetes species possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, there is a lack of direct scientific studies evaluating its efficacy specifically for allergic respiratory conditions in humans. No robust clinical trials have confirmed its benefit for allergies. Therefore, its use for respiratory allergies is mainly justified by tradition and anecdotal reports, rather than scientific validation. The evidence rating is low due to the absence of controlled human studies.
