Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sophora flavescens (commonly known as Ku Shen) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has long been used in various Asian herbal medicine systems. Its use for respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis or asthma, is primarily rooted in traditional medicine practices rather than robust scientific validation. In traditional Chinese medicine, Sophora flavescens is believed to "clear heat," "dry dampness," and reduce inflammation, which are thought to help relieve symptoms associated with allergic conditions affecting the respiratory tract.

Some laboratory studies have indicated that extracts from Sophora flavescens possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, including the inhibition of histamine release and modulation of immune responses. However, these findings are primarily preclinical (in vitro or in animal models), and there is a lack of high-quality human clinical trials directly assessing its effectiveness for respiratory allergies. The traditional use, supported by centuries of empirical observation in East Asian medicine, provides the main justification for its application in this context. Overall, while traditional use is strong, scientific evidence remains preliminary and limited.
